As part of this mission, the Abu Dhabi Biobank is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Lab Manager, Eye Bank, to lead the establishment and operations of its ocular tissue processing and distribution services. The Eye Bank is a critical component of the Abu Dhabi Biobank, supporting corneal transplantation and ocular research across the region. Operating in close collaboration with HAYAT, the UAE’s national organ and tissue donation program, the Eye Bank will manage all downstream activities from tissue receipt to final distribution, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and traceability. As Lab Manager, you will play a pivotal leadership role in building and managing this facility in alignment with Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) standards and UAE regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Lead the setup and daily operations of the Eye Bank’s lab services, including tissue processing, evaluation, preservation, and distribution
  • Manage a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, timely, and compliant delivery of ocular tissue for transplantation, research, and education.
  • Collaborate with HAYAT, transplant centers, regulatory bodies, and clinical partners.
  • Oversee quality control, documentation, and traceability of all tissue-related activities.

Strategic Development

  • Drive the growth and innovation of Eye Bank services.
  • Contribute to business planning, capital acquisition, and regional partnerships.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with EBAA Medical Standards, UAE Department of Health (DoH) regulations, and ISO 20387.
  • Lead internal audits, CAPA processes, and accreditation efforts.

Personnel & Training

  • Recruit, train, and manage technical staff.
  • Establish an EBAA-aligned training and competency program.
  • Foster a culture of safety, ethics, and continuous learning.

Data & Reporting

  • Maintain robust records and generate reports on tissue utilization, quality indicators, and compliance metrics.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, or related field (required).
  • Master’s degree in healthcare management or biomedical sciences (preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years in an EBAA-accredited or internationally recognized Eye Bank or tissue establishment.
  • At least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Familiarity with third-party tissue recovery models and national donation frameworks is a plus.

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of ocular anatomy, tissue preservation, and transplantation protocols.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proficiency in LIS/LIMS, Microsoft Office, and data reporting tools.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently in a multicultural, fast-paced environment.
